The company’s principals have diverse backgrounds and experience including real estate acquisition and development, power project finance and development, carbon markets, and emerging efficiency technologies. Spear Point Energy focuses on developing and financing solar based electric generation systems as part of the growing global trend towards a diverse energy economy. Sam Houston, CEO

As CEO of Spear Point Energy, Sam Houston develops and maintains key investor and business partner relationships. Over the last 8 years, Sam has developed and financed over 20MW of distributed solar projects for commercial and industrial customers, municipalities, and utilities.    Prior to co-founding Spear Point Energy, Sam was Managing Director of Camco North America with the responsibility to initiate, build and lead the North American team to expand their global carbon business.

Prior to his work in renewable energy, Sam worked 25 years in real estate development. He was responsible for all aspects of project developments, including project origination, equity and debt origination, negotiations, strategic planning, strategic relationships, overseeing construction, operations, design, marketing, sales and finance totaling over a billion dollars in projects.  He has worked with large funds, private equity groups, family offices and high net-worth private individuals in these investment opportunities. Mr. Houston studied in Edinburgh, Scotland at Fettes College and Dalhousie University in Canada.


J. Todd Mitchell, Chairman of the Board

Todd Mitchell has worked extensively in the energy industry, first as a principal in start-up companies related to natural gas exploration and geophysics; and more recently as founder and President of Two Seven Ventures LLC, a venture capital fund that backs development of low-carbon energy technologies and resources. Two Seven Ventures’ active investment themes include: energy storage; building power, lighting & controls; internet of things; smart water heating; and solar PV project development & finance. He is a co-founder and Director of Alta Resources, LLC, a developer of shale gas resources; and was a Director of Devon Energy Corporation where he served on its audit and reserves committees.

Mr. Mitchell has a BA in Geology from The Colorado College (1981), an MA in Geology from The University of Texas at Austin (1987), and an MSc in Sustainable Development (with Distinction) from Edinburgh University (2007). His academic interests include the global carbon cycle and the cycling of CO2 between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Roundtable for Science & Technology for Sustainable Development, organized by the US National Academies of Sciences. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Houston Advanced Research Center since 2000 and was its President from 2001 to 2006. He currently serves as a commissioner on the Air Quality Commission of Colorado.


Adam Lewis, Board Member

Adam Lewis has dedicated his career to supporting environmental education, shaping climate policy, and investing in projects that have direct and measurable benefits for the environment.

Adam was the central partner in the construction of Adam J Lewis Environmental Studies Center at Oberlin College, a building described by the New York Times as “the most remarkable” of a new generation of college buildings and by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of thirty “milestone buildings” of the 20th century.  Adam also supports the cutting-edge environmental and educational efforts of the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, the David Brower Center, the Charles H. Townes Center for Science at Furman University.

He has worked to shape policy through his support of the Presidential Climate Action Project – an energy policy focused on efficiency, advanced technologies, and renewable resources.  Adam was also the Executive Producer of The 11th Hour, a film about human impact of the earth’s ecosystems. Beyond education and policy, Adam is committed to concrete solutions and has a long track record of investing in both renewable energy projects and green technology.


Michael J. Glen, CFO

Mr. Glen is a seasoned finance, business and operations executive. He has held various leadership positions in a diverse range of firms, from a software startup to a Fortune 100 multinational petroleum company.  He has been CFO for Fiberforge and Myers & Co. Architectural Metals, helping to more than double the size of each company during his tenure.  Prior to that, Mr. Glen helped restructure a venture-stage workflow software company to a point where the firm could be sold to generate some return for the investors. He also worked for 11 years with Unocal in roles ranging from supply chain management to corporate M&A to international business development.  Mr. Glen earned his MBA in finance/accounting from the University of Colorado and his bachelor of science in chemical/petroleum refining from the Colorado School of Mines.


Jorge E. Vargas, Executive Vice President, Head of Origination and Project Finance

Jorge Vargas has over a decade of experience in renewable energy development and principal investments in the solar sector.  Mr. Vargas has developed, acquired, financed and structured joint ventures across all verticals of solar industry, including: Utility, Residential, C&I and Community Solar in multiple geographies.

Most recently Mr. Vargas served as Head of the Americas for AMP Solar Group where he led AMP’s entry into the US Solar Market. Prior to that, he was the Co-Head of the Solar Desk at Morgan Stanley Commodities where he focused on Origination and Project Financing of principal investments in solar projects. Mr. Vargas started his solar career at Lennar Corporation where he pioneered the New Home Residential Solar PPA in California. Prior to these roles, Mr. Vargas was a junior investment banker at Bank of America and JP Morgan.  Mr. Vargas grew up in his native Ecuador and earned his BA at Columbia University in the City of New York.


Rune Hansen, Executive Vice President

Rune Hansen has focused specifically on the US commercial solar market for the past four years. Most recently, he managed structured finance at SPG Solar, one of the most seasoned EPC firms in the country. During his tenure, SPG financed three PPA projects through sale/leaseback agreements with PNC. Rune is a business and technology professional with 18 years’ international experience in Finance, Telecommunications, Enterprise Software and Management Consulting. Pursuing his passion for bringing game-changing technology-based solutions to market, he has worked in world-leading organizations in strategic roles in finance, sales, marketing, product management and engineering.

Rune holds an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Manchester in the UK.


Chad Roach, Director of Project Delivery

As Director of Project Delivery Chad Roach is focused on execution of Spear Point Energy’s construction and development team.

With over ten years work experience in management and oversight on various projects within the construction and development industry, Chad brings a deep level of project management and development experience to Spear Point Energy. Chad has developed a high level of success in project development, project management, operations, and process development over his working career. Chad joins the team with direct management of over 30+Mw of distributed generation projects in various utility markets across the US, taking them from PPA execution through development to interconnection and final hand off to operations. His experience in areas such as PPA, EPC contract negotiation, EPC management, land use permitting, lease negotiation, and Interconnection design/engineering will help solidify Spear Points Energy’s project development and construction arm.

Chad holds a B.A in Business Communications from the State University of New York Plattsburgh.


Rachel Middleton, Contracts Manager

Rachel Middleton brings 17 years of experience in office management and in the legal industry. Ms. Middleton handles the administrative operations of Spear Point Energy and oversees contract preparation and management, formation of entities, organizing board meetings, new project launches and closings. Ms. Middleton’s professional experience includes marketing and securities compliance at The Hartford Mutual Funds, environmental affairs with the Aspen Skiing Company and complex litigation work with two prominent Aspen area law firms. She obtained her B.A. in English and History from Central Connecticut State University and holds a paralegal certification from the University of Colorado at Denver.


Antonio Baltazar, Staff Accountant

Antonio worked in the oil and gas industry for 4 years while attending Colorado Mountain College in Rifle. Upon completion of his Associates Degree in Accounting, Antonio joined Spear Point Energy in September 2015.
