The company’s principals have diverse backgrounds and experience including real estate acquisition and development, power project finance and development, carbon markets, and emerging efficiency technologies. The founders, Sam Houston, Bob McClenachan, and Todd Mitchell, had the vision to create a company focused on developing and financing solar based electric generation systems as part of the growing global trend towards a diverse energy economy. Sam Houston, Chief Executive Officer
Sam Houston develops key investor and business partner relationships for the
Company, and develops and implements its business strategies and visions
together with fellow members of the executive committee.
Mr. Houston, co-founder of Spear Point Energy LLC (an independent power
producer and investor in distributed solar projects), has been involved in
the development of successful renewable energy projects. Prior to
co-founding Spear Point Energy LLC, he was Managing Director of Camco North
America with the responsibility to initiate, build and lead the North
American team to expand their global carbon business.
During his 25 years in the real estate industry, Mr. Houston has been
responsible for all aspects of project developments including project
origination, equity and debt origination, negotiations, strategic planning,
strategic relationships, operations, marketing, sales and finance, managing
design and construction, totaling over $1 billion in projects.
Mr. Houston has been a principal, founder and Managing Director of numerous
real estate entities for which he led the development and ownership groups.
These included multi-family residential developments, single family and
planned unit developments, fractionalized condominium developments,
commercial building developments, industrial mixed-use developments, and
large land acquisitions nationwide. He has worked with large funds, private
equity groups, family offices and high net-worth private individuals in
these investment opportunities.
Mr. Houston studied in Edinburgh, Scotland at Fettes College and at
Dalhousie University in Canada.
Bob McClenachan, Chief Operating Officer
Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, Robert McClenachan has over 20 years of experience in developing, acquiring and financing independent power generation projects and is the foundation for Spear Point Energy’s ability to provide value-added growth and development opportunities in the clean and renewable energy markets.
Mr. McClenachan was instrumental in the development of four successful independent power companies and has held executive positions both in the United States and internationally. Mr. McClenachan founded Catamount Energy, NRG Asia Pacific, Energy Developments, Inc and Access Energy. He has been responsible for the profitable investment of more than $3 billion in projects ranging in size from 3 to 1,680 megawatts and valued from $2 million to $750 million.
Robert McClenachan holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Masters of Business Administration.
J. Todd Mitchell, Chairman
Todd Mitchell has worked extensively in the energy industry, first as a principal in start-up companies related to natural gas exploration and geophysics; and more recently as founder and President of Two Seven Ventures LLC, a venture capital fund that backs development of low-carbon energy technologies and resources. Two Seven Ventures’ active investment themes include: power storage; energy analysis for buildings; integrating solar power into buildings; thermoelectric power generation; and fiber-reinforced composites for light-weighting. He is a co-founder and director of Alta Resources, LLC, a developer of shale gas resources, and was a director of Devon Energy Corporation from 2001 to 2011, where he served on its audit and reserves committees. Mr. Mitchell has a BA in Geology from The Colorado College (1981), a MA in Geology from The University of Texas at Austin (1987), and an MSc in Sustainable Development (with Distinction) from Edinburgh University (2007). His academic interests include the global carbon cycle and the cycling of CO2 between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Mr. Mitchell is a member of the Roundtable for Science & Technology for Sustainable Development, organized by the US National Academies of Science. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Houston Advanced Research Center (www.harc.edu) since 2000 and was its President from 2001 to 2006.
